Birds and the Bees: Province launches new campaign against sexual violence

Birds and the Bees movie poster

Last week, the Nova Scotia government launched a new sexual violence prevention campaign aimed at youth. Check it out at breakthesilencens.ca.

The "Birds and the Bees" campaign features two animated videos, inspired by popular cartoons like The Simpsons and Bojack Horseman, that depict common situations that young people face when navigating issues of sexuality and consent. The first video is live now; another will be released later this year.

In addition to the videos, breakthesilencens.ca provides links and maps to services for sexual assault survivors, including SHNS member-centres across Nova Scotia. Member-centre staff anywhere can provide referrals and advocacy for survivors seeking help. At Halifax Sexual Health Centre, some medical services are available, including arranging access to a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.

Sexual Health Nova Scotia believes that sexual violence is a serious public health issue. Nobody can truly experience positive sexual health in an environment where violent or coercive sexual acts are normalized, and where victims of violence are shamed or mistrusted.

We applaud the Government of Nova Scotia for creating these videos, and we encourage everyone to watch them, whatever your age.

However, there is still much work left to be done to create a province free from sexual violenceWe look forward to seeing and supporting the continued work of the government and our partner community organizations on this important issue.
